No less than a week ago, we read a magnificent report about how students are staying in North Carolina schools. Today, we read that a sixteen-year-old girl had her throat slashed in school. We can only hope that the fifteen-year-old perp will not be suspended so her attendance will remain sufficiently high for her to graduate. As for the girl in the hospital, let’s hope she’s crazy enough to come back for more and keep our stats high. I can only recall a girl I interviewed way back when I wanted to learn why kids were dropping out. She said she had been bullied. Girls (at Asheville High) carried razor blades in their purses and in their mouths.

Read full article » No Comments »One often hears questionable stats about people of one gender or the other not being able to keep their mind off a topic not mentioned in polite conversation. The amazing stats may very well be true of members of Asheville City Council, because they will concern themselves, once again, with, as restaurateur Dwight Butner put it at one of the meetings, “who you love, and how you love.”
