Like a lot of cities with too much money to blow out their ears these days, Waynesville found itself helpless without border signs. It became imperative that an archway be placed at the entrance. It goes without saying that the newspapers are quoting people who say they are excited. Since one hears a lot these days that “art makes you feel,” this is truly art. It impels me to scream, “How stupid!”
There is a bright side, however, the $5000 object was commissioned entirely by the private sector. These people have a right to spend their money as they please, just as I have a right to evaluate its contribution to the humanities.
